Word. That sucks. I'll have to make fun of other teams that i know at Alcan to rile them up and get them on here. I'll tell them that they're old farts who are behind the times and can't turn on their computer monitors or remember their login for the life of them.  Laughing

There's at least one comp level team in every heat so it doesn't really who you draw... it's gonna be the same each heat... for every one or two very strong teams in the heat, there's that same number of weak teams... The grid seems pretty balanced from heat to heat...

i'm not sure who the destiny dragons are (anyone care to scare me?) , but CIBC will win our heat quite handily.

Destiny's Dragons are a scary bunch. really big doods in their 30's and 40's. Monkey paddled with them in Kent last year and was thoroughly impressed.

Totally forgot that CIBC picked up a large contingency of Thunder... So... congratulations Steamrollers, you've got CIBC and Destiny Dragons...

I expect nothing less than third in your race...

cool, it's always good to race against tough teams.

Cibc just sorta walked away from everyone in that Fcrcc Regatta A-final.
They definately haven't skipped a beat.

Destiny Dragons...Laoyam/Bald Eagles...  they're only winners because someone behind me was splashing and distracted my focus.

OK... Just took a look at the full race grid and here are my thoughts...

first race means absolutely nothing...
2nd race...  1&2 go to Comp/Rec A, 3&4 for to Rec B, 5&6 go to Rec C, 7&8 go to D... 9th goes to E
In the third race, top 1&2 got to Championship heat, 3&4 go to Consolation and the rest go home unless you're in the Rec A/Comp Division where 1&2 goto Comp Final, 3&4 goto Comp consolation, 5&6 goto Rec A Final and 7&8 goto Rec A Consolation....

At the end of the festival.. there will be 18 Comp teams, 18 Rec A teams, and 36 of the each division of Rec B, C,D and E.  So they basically just pushed the majority of the Rec A teams last year into Rec B and so forth down the line.

I thought they changed the format of the race this year?  This looks exactly like all the previous years of Alcan except there's consolation rounds now!

This kind of format is a joke... too many teams will fluff their second race in hopes of placing for a medal... completely assinine..

The race grid can be found at http://yvrdb.icommunity.com/files/2003ADBFRaceGrid.pdf

I guess that's considered a change.  Just don't like the "whole, one race seeds you, the next race determines your fate"

Also note that all teams compete against each other.

Before the Competitive teams were segregated and raced amongst themselves.
(that sounds a lot like victoria & kelowna doesn't it?)

That's the big change.  The turnout for competitive crews have been dwindling over the last few years, so there wasn't enough to keep them seperate.

I think it's a good change though.  Many people don't realize it, but the depth and level of competition in Vancouver is incredible.  So we're very lucky to have this as our 'home field'.

Total of 162 REC/COMP teams at Alcan.

Below is a sample of how placing is determined for the first 9 heats of the 1st race. They're just using a simple shifting of numbers.  The left column is the current race number.  The top row is the position your team finishes.  The grid is the next race you go to.   You can see the diagonals in the grid from left to right are the same race number.  So 1st race doesn't mean anything.

Placing --   1st   2nd   3rd   4th   5th   6th   7th   8th   9th
Race 03 -   23-   31-   30-   29-   28-   27-   26-   25-   24-
Race 04 -   24-   23-   31-   30-   29-   28-   27-   26-   25-
Race 05 -   25-   24-   23-   31-   30-   29-   28-   27-   26-
Race 06 -   26-   25-   24-   23-   31-   30-   29-   28-   27-
Race 07 -   27-   26-   25-   24-   23-   31-   30-   29-   28-
Race 08 -   28-   27-   26-   25-   24-   23-   31-   30-   29-
Race 09 -   29-   28-   27-   26-   25-   24-   23-   31-   30-
Race 10 -   30-   29-   28-   27-   26-   25-   24-   23-   31-
Race 11 -   31-   30-   29-   28-   27-   26-   25-   24-   23-

Below is a sample of how placing is determined for the first 9 heats of the 2nd race. This race will seed you into an appropriate semi-final race.  The left column is the current race number.  The top row is the position your team finishes.  The grid is the next race you go to.  Teams are suppposed to end up in a semi-final race with teams of similar competitive level.

Placing --   1st   2nd   3rd   4th   5th   6th   7th   8th   9th
Race 23 -   67-   69-   63-   65-   57-   59-   53-   55-   51-
Race 24 -   68-   70-   64-   66-   58-   60-   54-   56-   51-
Race 25 -   67-   69-   63-   65-   57-   59-   53-   55-   51-
Race 26 -   68-   70-   64-   66-   58-   60-   54-   56-   51-
Race 27 -   67-   69-   63-   65-   57-   59-   53-   55-   51-
Race 28 -   68-   70-   64-   66-   58-   60-   54-   56-   51-
Race 29 -   67-   69-   63-   65-   57-   59-   53-   55-   51-
Race 30 -   68-   70-   64-   66-   58-   60-   54-   56-   51-
Race 31 -   67-   69-   63-   65-   57-   59-   53-   55-   51-

In SEMI-FINAL for REC B through E:
1st and 2nd go to FINAL RACE.
3rd and 4th go to CONSOLATION RACE.

The REC A semi-final will put teams into:
1st and 2nd go to COMP A
3rd and 4th go to COMP B
5th and 6th go to REC A FINAL
7th and 8th go to REC A CONSOLATION

This year, the REC A and COMP divisions have gotten smaller.  More teams have been padded into REC B through REC E.
