Yes, I agree with nakano - this is a really weak attempt to start clamping down on the boats squatting in False Creek.  I lived in San Diego and the same situation came up there.  More than not, the people that owned these boats lived on them and did so because it was cheap and they did not have to put out big bucks for moorage cost.  Most of them do not use their boats for intended purposes just for camping in a scenic spot.  FREE!  Added to that they are polluting the water down at False Creek and it will only get worse.
San Diego finally put their foot down and told them all to leave if they didn't have
permits for temporary moorage - but that was only for visitors who were actually visiting.  They hauled a lot of boats out of there, some that were barely above water, and found some leaking oil and other stuff.  Sure some people say that it is because of the Olympics but personally I think they are too Lenient with the 14 day out of a month  - come on!
And 21 out of 40 in the winter - what will that do?
I hope they get tougher, and the sooner the better.
And that's my Rant for the month! Mad

Well, during practice tonight...there seemed to be fewer boats in the Creek (closer to Science World).  I did see the police boats hovering around I guess checking to see if people were in fact in their boats.   Then again...it maybe because they needed that area cleared for this weekend's Red Bull Flugtag.

Some of the really bad looking hulks seem to be gone, especially west of Cambie.

HA! Paddled my OC1 towards Cambie to-day, and there are more boats than ever! One huge aluminium boat stretched right across the creek at the ferry terminal, and was it fun watching the loaded barge try to get around it! Big collisions to come if this continues. This problem will never go away! Can you imagine how many of these idiots can afford a fine of $500, and if they can, how many of them will pay it? Can you see the City of Vancouver towing these derelicts? And where to? The one that was sunk in the East end is now sitting on the beach at Burrard. It's been there for two weeks, rotting and smelling up the boat launch. If we think the problem has been solved, we are kidding ourselves. I'll bet that next year at Alcan, we have just as many boats to move and just as many miserable squatters smoking dope and screaming at the paddlers going by. Enough already. I'll paddle out into English Bay from now on and to hell with the Creek! The Coast Guard/FCRCC should change the rule of no dragonboats beyond the Granville bridge.
