Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone has heard about FCRCC Youth Program?  Are any of you registering your kids? This is the information I received from the website....Just asking around...
**************************************

Day Camps:

Week-long, scheduled through July & August.
Full day or ½ day combined with Tennis
Please visit FCRCC.com for registration information & updates

FCRCC camps expose kids to a variety of paddling crafts in game, race, and instructional environments. Our coach will choose the type of hull according to the abilities of the class, so that students can be challenged in modest steps to progressively trade off stability for speed.

Beginner kayak will focus first on maneuvering skills by using short, stable, rudderless sit-on-top kayaks in game situations. Having acquired some stability and confidence in their paddle mechanics, students will then be introduced to racing trainers and real racing kayaks with stabilizers.

Beginner canoe will introduce maneuvering via marathon racing canoes, then learn the high kneel body position of the Olympic discipline first with the more stable team boats and finally in racing canoes with stabilizers.

Junior War Canoe:

Our War Canoe program is all about learning to paddle in the high-kneel position, without having to steer. It's a natural cross-trainer for dragon boaters who want to reach an elite level, but it's also an incredible boat to race.

We're working with other clubs to add War Canoe racing to existing regattas and we want to be ready when they are. It's a tough program to start because the any all-rookie crew is so unstable that everyone has a hard time learning the basics, but we've just outfitted a Dragon Boat with floor boards so rookie stability is no longer an issue, now we just need the engine!

It's not easy, but if you're up for the challenge and you have one good knee then just drop-in on a practice. If you're a club member or part of any other program then it's free to join. There's plenty of room, we have a borrowed War Canoe (C-15), two C-4s, the dragon boat with floor- boards (C-24!) and all the blades and buns.

Practices will normally be on weekends, see FCRCC.com for updates.

Youth Flatwater:

This 2X/week training format provides a comprehensive introduction to the Olympic flatwater canoe and kayak disciplines. Our nationally certified coach will use a variety of hull types and stability gadgets to quickly discover and develop each student's natural abilities. While flatwater disciplines generally develop balance, core strength, and endurance, racing success also depends on the ability to relax. It's a sport with more zen than coordination or quickness.

Weekday practices will focus on skill development in individual boats with all participants encouraged to paddle both C1 and K1. Although a typical club team will have more kayakers than canoeists, everyone must be able to race the War Canoe at the end of the regatta. Team-boat practices will normally be scheduled for Fridays or weekends, combining the Mon/Wed and Tue/Thu training groups.

Starting May 01 we will be offering two weekly after-school coached practice schedules: M/W and Tu/Th 4:00-6:00 with a maximum class size of 8. The focus will be on basic K1 and C1 skills during these practices, shifting to team boat skills during a combined weekly practice.

Ages 13-17 with exceptions based on ability, must be able to swim 50m with a lifejacket. Cost $50/month, or $200 to the end of the membership year, September 30. Registration is available during posted office hours.

Hey Orca Paddler, thanks for posting about the FCRCC youth programs.

The web site also has some pictures from the two free "demo days" with a bunch of kids from Hamber and elsewhere. Looks like they had some fun and that kayak polo looks interesting. To see the photos, click on the "Gallery" link at www.fcrcc.com.

Adult db paddlers are making some valiant efforts to pull their way to the national podium but I have the feeling it will take a new generation of paddlers who have gone through early flatwater training to bring the title back to Vancouver.
