Greatings to the West Coast!
In 2005, I introduced a new approach to ranking dragon boat teams for Central Canada known as the true rankings. This approach used a statistical method to adjust festival times to be comparable accross festivals - thus developing a time based ranking system where those teams that raced fastest, ranked the highest. The approach has been highly sucessful and heralded as the most accurate in terms of ranking crew speeds - not falling subject to issues that plague most point based systems (how to determine many points per festival, teams that compete the most get ranked the highest, etc.).
The approach is reasonable complicated and I have developed a basic methodology piece to explain it, so I won't go into great detail, but you can read more and check out the results here:
http://www.dragonboat-truerank.blogspot.com/The approach is limited in that it only works when you have a cross sample of boats competing in the same festivals. Thus, the central canada rankings cannot be extended out to BC. However, a West Coast ture ranking system could be developed.
My question is simple, is there an interest from anyone out there in helping to develop a West Coast time based ranking system? If so, I would be more than willing to help explain the approach in detail. Just email me at
[email protected]Dragon Boat Canada has agreed to host the rankings for this year and given my commitments in Central Canada, I would not be able to provide them with a West Coast Ranking. However, if you have a few people out there who don't mind digging around in some spread sheets for the sake of a better ranking system for the community, then we might be able to develope a West Coast ranking which I'm sure DB Canda would be willing to host as well.
