Maybe it is time for this regatta, to say thanks for the memories.
I remember trying this event and the tides make real racing just a joke.
Probably a great place to practise but not for a regatta or festival.

I hope it doesn't, I had a great time at Richmond yesterday.  Things went smoothly, everything ran on time, it's great having the new boathouse and washrooms with running water.  Music was great.  We've been at Richmond every year in one form or another and despite some of the issues in the past (and yes, we were in the dirty boat a few years ago!), we do have a great time each year and will most likely be back again next year despite the ferry costs!

As for the tide thing, well, doesn't that seem to be a common theme with a few festivals?  You just go with the flow and race.

I agree with Katy here. I have been to many Richmond Festivals and have thoroughly enjoyed it.  I'm dissappointed I missed this year's, but I heard that it well run and fun, despite it being small (nice they didn't drag the day out though). I hope this event can stick it out as it is great to have a few events on the lower mainland for paddlers to participate at. although the festival was small this year, it is obviously rebuilding and hopefully paddlers can continue to support it. afterall, harrison had a couple of rough years, and it looks like it is recovering nicely with a successful event this past weekend as well. i hope to see the same in richmond, especially with the first class facility, boats, and unique racing conditions. I actually didn't see much info out about richmond beforehand, so maybe they need to promote it more. perhaps richmond and harrison should chat too and look at running on different weekends!

I've raced at this venue many times and it's a truly unique experience racing in a river, something most west coasters don't often experience.  It has it's place and shouldn't be so quickly dismissed.  I see the above writer is from the Harrison group and may be responding to the excitement of their own event scheduled on the same weekend.  (Let's not forget the struggle Harrison has had to get established)  I guess I think that there are only so many summer weekends and rescheduling for either event may not be easy.  Ultimately, lets let the consumers, we dragon boaters, decide where to go.  I'm so grateful that there is such a variety of events to choose from, many of them close enough to make them affordable....and fun!

If you guys think the Richmond venue has crazy currents, let's have a regatta in Ft Langley in the spring and we'll see the first sub 1 minute 500 meter!

GO is a solid Race Management group as well and with Water's edge, run most of the more enjoyable and well run races in BC.
We need the Beer Garden from Nanaimo, the food vendors from Alcan, the BUks from WE (milleniums for rougher waters...) Race course from Harrison (without the wind). the beach front beer garden from Vernon, the friendly and competative atmosphere of The VI championship (these guys like each other...sniff) , the amazing downtown venue for spectators of Victoria (nothing bumps the rate like the last 75 meters of screaming supporters)
NOW THAT would be a great race weekend!

The more choices of dragon boating event to choose from (in the lower mainland), the better.
Lets not forget that with more events, comes the potential of growing this sport even bigger by drawing in more beginner paddlers that could possibly fall in love with this sport.

Kinda too bad that the Harrison festival was the same day.  Would have wanted to participate in this one as well.
