Hello from the Navy!

On SATURDAY 3 JULY 2010, Navy Dragon Anchors will host the third-annual Navy Chicken Run at the Gorge Rowing & Paddling Centre in Victoria, BC.

If you participated in 2008 or 2009, you should have a good idea of what to expect.  If you have not been involved in the Navy Chicken Run, you've been missing out.  This is an event for those who could use a whole new experience in the dragon boats beyond simple start-to-finish races.  Rather than pure brawn, your team's skills, knowledge, creativity, and livers are put to the test (there is a great beer garden afterward with an awesome DJ lined up!).

FOR ONLY $200, you get:
- Team registration for 16-26 members (minimum 14 paddlers).  Up to 26 may compete on the water at the same time.
- A chance to win Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals.  These are real medals, not ribbons, and they're cool too!
- Up to eleven hours of fun - if you can handle that - plus wild stories to share for years to come.
- Team building and revelations about your communication abilities (or lack thereof).
- New challenges, different surprises.

Other quick notes:
- At last year's event, the NCR teams and Navy Dragon Anchors raised over $1600 for the BC Cancer Foundation!
- The beer garden will have Islander Lager and, as appropriate for the Canadian Naval Centennial, Sea Dog Amber Ale.  We will also serve coolers and free pop to designated drivers.
- Leave the pets at home; try to leave the children there too.  13 years and under are not welcome.  While 14-18 are not banned from NCR2010, they are strictly forbidden from the beer garden and the awards ceremony held within.
- Designated driving (carpool, taxi, rented bus, etc.) is STRONGLY encouraged!
- Some teams will be missing members due to the holiday on Thursday (i.e. Canada Day).  This is an excellent opportunity to bring in potential new paddlers, friends, family and so on to try the sport.
- NCR2010 is capped at 24 teams.

Still on the fence?  Find anyone who participated last year and get that person's opinion.  At less than $10 per person, you have far more to lose by not participating!

We look forward to seeing you on July 3,

Rob Grigor.

Here is the poster for the Navy Chicken Run 2010.

To anyone wondering, the creature in the background is from Paddlers of the Fifth Moon's winning entry for the "Picasso Chicken" event.

Now you're probably wondering even more.  Well, sign up and find out!

For those that can't convince their full team to do this event then grab half your team and invite as many keen folk that have nothing to do with paddling at all.  They get a slight intro to dragon boat and may end up wanting more, you get to go have a lot of fun at a no pressure event and plus, you absolutely have no clue what skills you'll need for this one and your non-paddling friend may be a complete superstar at one of the tasks in this event.

For the past 2 years we've had a mostly Fifth Moon crew, supplemented by perhaps 6-10 people that either have never seen a dragon boat before or have not been in a boat with our crew and each time we've walked away with bronze medals, possibly a couple more paddlers for the rest of the season and had an awesome time.  Some of the stations are so random that paddling skill doesn't always guarantee you a win!

I can say on behalf of my crew, this has been an excellent team-building opportunity for us and we wouldn't miss it!  We're definitely looking forward to it again and already have at least 5 non-dragonboaters on our roster so far to give it a whirl.

Plus it's cheap, you can't lose!

<Shameless self promotional plug begins NOW>

Rob and the Navy crew have graciously agreed to let the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival attend the Chicken Run this year to sell off some older Festival merchandise.  Be sure to come by our tent sometime during the day and check out the deals!

<End shameless self promotional plug>

Not sure I'll be on a team this year, but if anyone out there needs a stern for the day I may be able to make myself available...

Butter... given the hijack, the least you could do is tell people how awesome the event is!

To anyone needing a good stern: Butter's crew last year, Precision Impossible, was the fastest through the Manoeuvring event last year, beating out 17 other teams.  They did not win NCR2009 but his skillful steering helped gain them big points for the final total.

Off topic: The Navy Chicken Run 2010 medals have been ordered.  They will be cooler than any medal you have ever won in your entire life, in any sport, guaranteed*.

Rob.

My bad Rob.

Yes, the event is incredibly fun, and I had a blast steering that course...

The Navy Dragon Anchors are an awesome team and great group of people.  I've heard nothing but great things about this even and hope to attend one of these years!  That said.  Like NFW it will not be this year  Sad

Canadian Nationals is on the same weekend.  Could you not have picked a different date!

Thanks DP.  Yes, one of these years...

To match last year, it was actually going to be on June 12.  The weather would have been fantastic too.  Unfortunately, we were told months ago about the International Fleet Review falling on the same date and that none of our sailors would have been available to host the event.  July 3 became the next best date.  Sorry for the conflict with the Nationals.  Those not going to Whistler just have to remember that it's technically not a long weekend (stop blaming me!) and that the Navy Chicken Run is the perfect opportunity to bring out new people to paddle with their crews.

There is still lots of space available but I need to hear soon from other teams wanting to sign up!

I may have people from work that are interested in hopping on a boat for this event, if you're wanting to put a team in but are short some paddlers and you want to see if I can find you someone, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] and if I get people that are interested I can send them your way for the day.

They likely won't have paddling experience but you never know what other useful skills they may have!  Smile

I was talking to the main steers from Westshore Warriors yesterday.  They have enough people to enter a team but both of their trained steerspeople will be gone July 3.

Is there a good steers out there whose team is not doing NCR2010?

I can probably use a second one as well as I may have a group of naval officer students forming a team.  They would need a very experienced steersperson to lead them on the water.

Any takers can reach me at [email protected] and I will put you in touch with your new, temporary families.

I am hearing from a couple teams that are having trouble filling all their seats.  If you are not on a team that is doing the Navy Chicken Run, shoot me an email and I will put you in touch with a good crew.  Ten bucks for hours of fun and challenges, plus beer, medals, etc.  Bring a friend too!  Hurry!!
