From Chloe.....
What a great start!

I do not have words to describe how proud I was to be a part of this community today.  We had some major steps forward today; Premier Open!  Premier Women! Premier Mixed! Leaps forward for the Juniors, Rock Solid U24, the start of the day with the little boat that could - the late starting Senior A Mixed, Senior A Women taking gold...with a 20 second time penalty, the newly formed Senior A Open crew on the podium in an incredibly competitive field of crews, Senior C Mixed keeping their composure for a silver after a pretty serious collision, Senior B crews showing their dominance - just incredible.

Total Count for the day:

Gold      10

Silver     5

Bronze  1

Number of races entered?  16

A special thank you to all of the Canadian Officials for working tirelessly today. It was great to see you all (Normand, Kerry, Bern, Greg, Chris, Kim) all in key positions.  We all know that it is no coincidence that this event is going so well.

Under the competition rules

3.6   Medals/Trophies.  Championship Medals and Trophies shall be awarded to the first three crews in each Competition Class, provided that at least crews from six (6) different nations are entered in the class in question, in addition an overall ‘IDBF World Champion Club’ Trophy may be awarded to the crew that gains the most points overall.  The IDBF Nations Cup points format should be used for this purpose

Points are determined by the premier class.  Too bad its not based on moat medals. Smile

And the overall IDBF Nations Cup goes to ........ China.

When you think of sports in which Canada dominates, you might think of hockey. Or, perhaps, hockey. But there's another event in which Canadians stand head-and-shoulders -- and waist -- above: dragon boating.    Dragon boating, which originated in China, is a sport where teams of 22 paddlers race in long canoes with a dragon's head on the bow. And this past weekend, at the eleventh World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Hungary, Canada emerged as the sport's superpower, winning thirty gold medals. To put that in perspective, China had the second-most golds: seven.Caroline Galipeau is a member of Canada's national women's premier team, and she won several of those gold medals.

Letter: Canada made a strong showing at Dragonboat Championships in Hungary
Montreal Gazette
July 30th, 2013

The 11th World Nations Dragonboat Championships took place in Szeged, Hungary, July 24-28.

Four hundred athletes from across Canada, and yes, some from Quebec, competed with the strongest teams in the world.

Canada topped the list in gold medals, and won silver and bronze, as well.

We watched, on livestream, from Hungary, as our national anthem was played at the podium many times. They did us proud.

Unfortunately, I did not find any press coverage of this event.

Such passion and dedication to a sport, that is not subsidized in Canada, should not have gone unrecognized.

Black Dragons denied visa to world championships
Michael D. Abayateye

GhanaWeb
Friday, 26 July 2013

Ghana’s hopes of winning medals has been dashed as the Royal Netherlands Embassy has refused the national boating team, the “Black Dragons” Entry Visas to participate in the on-going World Boating Championship in Hungary.

They claim the ages of the paddlers were doubtful though there were legal documents to prove their right ages.

State authorities including, the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ intervention for the Embassy to rescind their decision fell on death ears.

“It is also disheartening that after government has committed significant amount of resources into training, preparation as well as actual participation in the championships, the team should be refused Entry Visas at the eleventh hour,” a letter dated July 16, 2013 from the ministry to the embassy stated.

It stated further: “It is disturbing that you blatantly disrespected letters from the Highest Office of the land, i.e Office of the President, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration as well as my office as the sector Minister proving the authenticity of the documents of the team members.”

It continued: “It is worth noting that the Ghana Rafting and Dragon Boat Association (GRDBA) is a bona fide and recognized member of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) and as such the recognized national team of the state.

“Your action of refusal of the Entry Visas would not only cause the nation the opportunity of participating and winning medals at the event, but also losing huge amount of resources.”

The above caution from the ministry was disregarded by the embassy and held on to their decision as the competition is currently underway and the “fishermen” are left to their fate.

This development also goes a long way to discourage individuals and corporate entities to invest in sports in the country.

President of the GRBA, Mr. Rex Daniel Wussah believes it was a deliberate act by the embassy to disallow the team participate in the championship and considered their excuse as flimsy.

He said, “This is complete racism against the fisher folks and it is very demoralizing and must be condemned by authorities.”

Hon. Wussah, also DCE for Ada questioned: “Since when has individuals become expects of knowing peoples age by just looking into their faces?”

He further appealed to state authorities to be up and doing as the embassy’s decision practically defied state authorities.

Much, he said, has been invested in the preparation of the team and it is very sad to watch all go down the drain.
