Any thoughts on the teams racing in Victoria Sunday? GD's are always strong but what about the rest of the field? Heard around 30 teams entered. Should be interesting as it's only a 250m race. Over before you know it!!

Here's my thoughts on how it will go down,

     1) GD's
     2) Dragonauts
     3) Extreme Reach
     4)PI

Wild Card) Navy, they just started practicing but always seem fast over the shorter distances.

29 teams is 2 more than last year. There are a couple of Victoria teams that went under this year (Sweet and Sour Dragonballs and Capital Iron Dragons) as well a few have struggled to fill out their boats in time for this race.

A big part of it is the season in Victoria is geared toward the Victoria festival in August.  None of the novice teams, which consititue probably an increase in teams of 30%, have started practicing yet.  They don't usually get on the water until after Alcan.  I think 30 island teams in May is pretty good, especially since Nanaimo in July is the first big race of the year for most of them.

You know, there is something horribly demoralizing when your first race is with the GD's....it then becomes a fight for second Laughing

The sprints are a fun day.

The sprints are growing, I think this is only the third year for them and it is a nice breakin to the season.  The comments concerning the Victoria season seem to be right on the mark.  While established teams tend to start practice in April, the novice program does not really get underway until July.

Ah well.....it must be summer....there are dragon boats on the Gorge!

Results (times are close I can't remember the exact ones sorry)

     Blue final A

     1) Gorging Dragons        1:00
     2) Extreme Reach          1:04 and a bit
     3) Navy Dragon Anchors 1:04 and a bit more (very close race for second)
     4) Dragonauts               1:05

Very trying conditions with gusty crosswinds making things very interesting for those steering. Things ran on time for the most part and overall a well run, fun festival. The official results will be posted online either Monday or Tuesday.

It was a good time.  The wind was cutting across the course, but the tide was pushing the boats, until the finals when it slacked.  No rain though Smile
As with the last few years, it has been run effectively.  The course itself is a bit out of the way in comparison to the Inner Harbour, which meant there wasn't many non-related spectators around.

I want to thank Amazing Grays for letting me drum on their boat this festival.

Dragonauts heading into their first race.

First Race of the Day: Blu By U (lane 2) winning their first race with Dogpaddlers (lane 3) in background.

Blue Final B midpoint (PI in lane 3 and St'Keya in lane 4).

Blue Final B near finish (Dragonslayers in lane 2).

Heat 3 - Lane 1: Team Phoenix - Lane 2: Gorging Dragons - Lane 3: Snogard Dragons - Lane 4: Island Breaststrokers

Blue Final A - Lane 1: Extreme Reach - Lane 2: Gorging Dragons - Lane 3: Navy Dragon Anchors - Lane 4: Dragonauts

Thanks Rob (Navy Dragon Anchors) for the corrections!
