It's fine for those of us around the 5'-5'4 mark. I've taken over my fiance's paddle, FYI.  Nothing wrong with mine, just don't need two.

I am a newbie at this and I am a bit confused.  I am 5' 4" and my present paddle is 46" - which was a gift.  My proportions are even as far as leg to arm ratio - 29" inseam, fingertips at midthigh.  If you are trading in your 47.5" paddle for your fiance's paddle what size should I be looking at?  How tall is your fiance?  What is the size of the paddle you are moving to?

Amyrock, I've used this as a rule of thumb.

Sit in the boat with your crew how you would normally rotate.  Place your outside hand with one handspan gap above the top of the blade.  Spin with hand so the paddle is upside down.  The top grip should touch the water.  In theory, that should feel good.  Note that if you are in different water (fresh versus salt), different boat (Millenium versus BuK), different crew (all fat & tall versus all short and wirey) and different stroke technique (more upright versus more bend) it will change the length of paddle.

The sucky part, the more fit you are, the more you can leverage (more water you can pull); therefore slightly greater length. 

In the end of the day, it is comfort.  What I have done in the past was to use a club paddle (46" & 48"), then asked fellow paddlers to borrow from that range.  I know that a 51" was just too slow for me and a 48" was not enough pull, so i checked out the in between lengths.

I have found I have to get a new high performance wooden paddle each year because of all those factors.  Just like runners.  Once I do join a permenant crew that keeps pushing the envelope together, I will probably buy my first carbon fibre.

As far as this paddle Special K is offering, it is one heck of a deal.

or, you could get yourself an adjustable paddle, so you don't need to keep buying a new one every year.
