Could I suggest that the basic problem is trying to run 5 lane heats with less than 10 boats. Fewer boat means that you will always be waiting for some to come in before you load.
The same problem happened last year in the afternoon, when they tried to run 5 lane heats. Fortunately, this year, we waited on the water where we could paddle, as opposed to the dock where we just got wetter.
Did anyone notice that the FC Grandragons, won the B Championship (9th out of 26). You should note that seat 10 was filled with Peggy and George with a combined age of 164. Go figure...
I can say that it was definitely the first event for some of the teams and steerspersons. I saw so many teams go way out only to take their time coming back. Why they did that who knows but many teams did that. In addition, at the start line there were many times when Lane 4 would line up where lane 2 was suppose to be and then all boats were crowded together, then the back them down and re-align had to happen. It was better in the afternoon but the first 4 or 5 races were very tough as all the steerspersons seemed to want to crowd the other boats (as an example the first race took over 10 minutes to get the steerspeople to line up properly in their lane).
As for the boat issue, basic problem was that one of the boats became decommissioned due to the steering mechanism being broke. You are then running 7 boats for a grid built around 8 boats, bound to be delays. As for the two heats per round that were 5 boat heats, I guess they could have had a 2 boat race which would have added more time on to the whole process also. Last year most heats were 5 boat heats and it definitely caused a problem, this year there was time to do a few 5 boat heats until the boat became unusable then it delayed everything. In the end they were 45 minutes behind schedule which is not bad if you consider running with 7 boats.
Cannot speak for how the dock handled boats coming in but I do believe the same comment was made last year, dock only allowed certain boats in at a time? Don't know for sure as I was not down there to see the fun. Let Watersedge know and they will try to improve next year.
I must say there were some great finals, Division A consolation was a lot of fun to watch and many more. Looks like it will be a great year of racing.

I have to agree with AlcanRanker, as the majority of the teams knew about the problems that one particular boat was having. Sometimes there's nothing we can do in terms of technical faults that can't be immediately fixed. Another thing we need to understand is that the docks-people were trying to keep an orderly fashion with the single dock they were using (we might be a little spoiled with multi-lane docks we're used to at DragonZone
). There's only so much room to move around on that dock, so I could understand why they had teams file down in order of their lane. It would be pretty chaotic if we had teams line down the dock from lane 4(or 5)-->1 then have them scramble around to get to their boats docked in different sequences (2,3,5,1,4 for example as opposed to 1,2,3,4,5). But we also have to remember that they became more lenient to this idea when they saw how anxious teams were getting.
Another note, it makes sense to get on your designated boat as soon as it becomes available. But at the same time, we might have boats that become confused as to which heats they might be a part of (such as the switch from 4 boat heats to 5, where the "lane 5" boat might cause some confusion.. and then of course when that one boat broke down, and different boats were designated for different lanes). Now this idea might sound stupid or confusing, but the idea is plausible as various mistakes can happen with slight misunderstandings. And then there's the argument that some teams may have more water time to warm-up than others, as some teams might have to wait for a whole heat to pass before they can get on their respective boat. We also need to give some consideration to the people working on the dock and their volunteers. They did the best they could with organization and efficiency in mind. Without them, the festival would be a mess.
Regardless, it was an awesome day of racing, whether the rain added to the moment or not. It's amazing to see the closeness between teams in numerous races, especially in Consolation A final. As well, there was a great battle between youth and wisdom
in B Final with our oldest and youngest teams taking the top two placements respectively

Also, Puppy's beautiful voice was often scuffed out by feedback from the speakers.
(thank goodness...ahem)
You could thank the garbage bags covering over the speakers, muffling puppy's voice at times lol

The real champions that day were the volunteers, especially Stephen and the young ladies down on the dock. 8+ hours standing in the freezing rain and cold, making sure all paddlers safely made it in/out of the boats. This crew deserves recognition for their efforts.
So next time you see Stephen on the docks at a festival, buy him a beer. He's only 14 but Dad says it OK!

So less than a second from 1st to 4th ~ wrong lane placements etc. PULEEZ - if it was any better of a day I would have asked for a re-race! It will prove to be a great year of racing with these results...too bad our first race isn't until July - have to chalk this one up in the best race of the year category!
