Hello all Western Dragon Boaters,

Dragon Boat Canada (DBC) is the governing body for dragon boat in Canada.  Currently, DBC is committed to hosting the next qualifying National Championships in BC in August of 2013.  These are club crew championships, so any team that belongs to a club which is a DBC member is eligible to participate.  Becoming a club member of DBC is a simple process and requires only a small fee.

The National Championships are officially sanctioned races held by Dragon Boat Canada which are the most competitive and most fun racing in Canada - Fair race course, top teams, and top officials.  In the past, some of the world's best teams who have competed in the Canadian National Championships have gone on to win the Club Crew World Championships (CCWC) including the Mayfair Predators and Western Canada's own False Creek Racing Canoe Club.

This year, DBC would like to see how well attended the Championships will be when hosted in BC in 2013.  Darwin Li, who is gauging interest on DBC's behalf, is gathering input so please let him know if you plan to attend or are interested.  Please email him to voice your interest or to get more information.  You may also contact one of the Western Reps for DBC.

There are categories for pretty much everyone - keep in mind also that there are womens, mixed, and open gender classes for all categories:

     Premier (No Age Restrictions).
Junior B - All paddlers and the drummer must be 15 or younger on January 1st of 2013.
Junior A - All paddlers and the drummer must be 17 or younger on January 1st of 2013.
U23 - All racers must be 17 or older or aged 23 or younger on June 1st of 2013.
Senior A - Steersperson and all paddlers must be 39 or older on June 1st of 2013.
Senior B (Grand Dragon) - Steersperson and all paddlers must be 49 or older on June 1st of 2013.
Senior C (Great Grand Dragon) - Steersperson and all paddlers must be 59 or older on June 1st of 2013.
Breast Cancer Survivor - Aside from the drummer or steersperson, all competitors must be breast cancer survivors.
Canadian University League (CURL) - seeks to promote inter-university competition through a points system.
Division 2 - Age-class free and a mixed division.  These races which are intended for: crews that want to
test the water at the Canadian Championships, newer crews, and those crews that want to race
at the Canadian Championships with fewer demands.

(Please note that these descriptions are abridged.  Check out the Rules of Racing, http://www.dragonboat.ca/files/Rules%20of%20Racing_Nov_2011_0.pdf, for complete racing class details.

Additionally, these National Championships will determine the top 5 teams in each category that will advance to the Club Crew World Championships (CCWC) in Italy for 2014.

If you would like more information or you would like to express your interest in attending the National Championships, please contact Darwin or one of the Western Reps.  We hope to see you there!

The courses are: 200m, 500m, and 2000m on the 500m course with turns.

The 200m and 500m results will the only ones that count for qualification for Italy. All 3 distances will count for National championships.

The list probably isn't updated, but just to clarify, what other races in the western region are considered qualifiers? Thanks!

Alcan usually is a qualifier.  If they are not a qualifier yet, someone should talk to them, so it can be.   I know the normal Victoria race will be a qualifier.
