Hey! What kind of boats were those? Are these the Dynasty boats we've heard about?

Yes, they are the Dynasty Dragon Boat. Used in Calgary. Advantages, wide for really big people and easier to turn. Disadvantages, too wide for me and too easy to spin-out.
Happy feature, they float in fresh water, even when you fill the boat full of fresh water.
Sad feature, they have more of a rounded keel than other dragon boats.

Gorging was ahead by about 1/2 a boat length around the 250 mark when they hit a small wake and the steersman wasn't able to keep it straight. They drifted in front of Calgary and there was a small collision. Both boats were holding hard at the time and it wasn't much of an impact.
Overall an great, well run festival. Great location, great weather, things ran on time or early for the most part (except for sunday morning, but that boat swamping was out of the organizers control) Fantastic beer gardens with a great band and girls in bikini's serving the drinks.
The only improvement I can see is to get different boats. There were quite a few instances of steersmen losing control. Maybe the BUK's from Vancouver next year??

Because the festival was small, the site worked well. We had a fenced paddlers village on the east, a fenced beer garden in the centre and vendors (really like Pogue Sports and Go To Gourmet being there). All were away from the water, allowing the public to access the water. No security to speak of, but as one person said, "This is Vernon, not Vancouver."
Only the marshalling area was adjacent to the water, as we beached and loaded boats, rather than use the docks. The sand was fine so i don't believe there was any damage to the boats - heck, Puppy even got teams to do power sets into the sand when returning from races. It also made it easier to bail the boats of water and sand.
Other than the beach, there was a public dock available for viewing near the end of the course. Rumour has it that a certain team from a "Strathcona" background used a private dock beyond the end of the course for viewing, BUT collapsed it due to heavy members of their team... I met this team, they all looked kind of waifish to me, so, i dunno.
Since it was in the 30's by both afternoons, the trees on the beach provided much needed shelter. If you plan on going to Vernon for the first time, bring your own tents as the festival does not provide them for you. They don't provide much, but the beach itself has a change room and bathroom facilities. Free parking lot north of the perimeter road with crossing guards (just like elementary school).
As for the races themselves, Waters Edge provided good service. Two division, women's and mixed. Six Dynasty dragon boats from Calgary. 2x200m and 1x500m Saturday using times for placement. 1 or 2x500m Sunday using placement(?). Saturday had an exhibition race, 1000m with mid-point turn. Sunday had an exhibition race of water skier pull within 25 seconds of start.
Race course was generally west to east on the north end of north-south lake. Lake is heavily used by swimmers, boaters and water skiers. Early Sunday morning had thermal winds blowing from south to north. Afternoon had fast power boats pulling water skiers, bringing their wake near the race course.
First Aid tent was run by Silver Star Mountain Resort Ski Patrol, which dealt mostly with bumps and bruises.
The only criticism about the event does not deal with the organizers, but the teams. As a dragon boater, I read the rules and find out about what is happening at the site. For example the 1000 meters could be a danger event because of the 180* turn and the regular races if the steersperson is not prepared for the boat (Dynasty DB) when water skiers produce their wake. Organizers helped on Friday evening by allowing some of us to take out the Dynasty DB for a spin, but very few people took advantage of their offer (well, it was Puppy's offer). Also, when a DB capsizes, the sterner is responsible for head count (by asking the crew to count down), injury report and keeping the crew with the capsized DB until help arrives. Again, organizers did everything right by ferrying crew back to shore to a single rally location, brought the (lightly) injured to the first aid tent, recovered, checked and brought the equipment back online. Heck, organizers put out a navigational line to mark off the swimming areas, but more than once DBs cut through (there was a good wind at the time).
(Damn, I sound like a shrill for Waters Edge. I really don't work for them, honest.)
The requests for the event in the future would be to keep the number of entrants small, and to have consolation final races.

Here is a link to a Video on U-Tube of a Dragon boat pulling a water skier at the Vernon Festival.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ze3IOfS1WI
The team is 'Extreme Currents' from Kamloops B.C.
Not the winning water ski pull at the event, that goes to Topmade Fusion.
Anyone else have videos of other teams pulling a water skier at this event?

So is it true that CRC protested to get their 4th place finish?? My position is part of dragonboating is battling the elements... included in the elements are wakes... in particular I'm refering to the re-race that took place this past weekend.

Sweet Heat, would you clarify your statement. Do you mean that dragon boating is battling external factors outside the race; therefore, no re-starts nor penalties if caused by an external factor? or do you mean re-starts and penalties allowed because boats should take responsibility to adjust for those external factors?

It is true that CRC protested the A final. We were hoping for a re-race, but due to time factors a re-race was not granted, so the officials chose to give us a time credit of sorts, thus putting us in 4th. We would not have protested if we felt we didn't have a chance at placing in the top 3. At the point of the collision we were about 1/2 boat length behind Gorging, when they had a mishap (S#$@ happens). According to the video we had on shore we were clearly in the running for 3rd, hence the protest. When we protested we expected a re-race as they had done that on the Sat, but as said before the officials chose not to grant a re-race. Only part that got me was the fact that we were having our best race of the weekend. Oh well.

It was an unfortunate event that occurred on the water as both teams (Gorging Dragons and CRC) were having a good race up to that point. In all honesty I'm not sure what happened with the Gorging boat. From what I hear their steers person lost control and was unable to regain it (easily done with the Dynasty's) resulting in the front of their boat cutting us off. At first it seemed unreal and a complete surprise to both boats. It was like you could see this happening, but couldn't believe it was happening. Then the brakes were applied hard and both teams bumped (or should I say SMASHED into one another with CHAOS & MAYHEM running wild - for you puppy). Glad no one was hurt.
As for the protest as magicpaddler put it we were hoping for a re-race from the race officials given that everyone was running neck and neck up to that point, but to no avail. Rather the race organizers went with adjusting our time instead. Like all competitors we would have like to battle it on the water, but it was completely out of our hands. It really would have been nice to see what kind of time we could have posted in that race given the stiff competition across the board and that it was our best race up to that point (again probably due to the teams on the water).
No hard feelings and looking forward to racing against each of these teams in the near future.
